Thank you for purchasing Painter 4! To install Painter right away, you can double-click the installer icon on the top level of the CD-ROM. Or, to get an overview of what's available on the disc, start the CD Central program. This multimedia "gateway" to the CD-ROM is packed with information and inspiration to help you get the most out of the materials here. The documents, installers, and galleries present on the disc can all be viewed or run from within CD Central.

Suggested Settings for CD Central
For best results, we suggest you run CD Central on a double-speed (2X) CD-ROM drive or faster. If possible, you should use the Monitors Control Panel to set your display to thousands or millions of colors.
Troubleshooting the CD-ROM
General
1. When I click an option in CD Central, I get the message "Sorry, not enough memory available to run this program."
- The option you clicked is designed to run a program outside of CD Central, but there is not enough free RAM to do so. CD Central can take up to 6.5 megabytes of memory. On computers with 8 to 12 megs of RAM, it's possible that little memory will be left over once CD Central runs. To free more RAM you should quit any other programs currently running. You can also temporarily remove fonts or extensions from your System Folder and reboot the Mac to free more memory.
If this still doesn't free enough RAM, you can simply exit CD Central and run the program in question directly from the CD-ROM. For example, if you were trying to click the option called "How to Reach Fractal Design," you can open the REFERENZ folder on the CD-ROM and double-click the document directly.
2. CD Central crashes with a "Type 11" error when I try to run it.
- If you're using a Power Mac, make sure you have both QuickTime and the QuickTime PowerPlug in your Extensions folder, and that they are both the same version. You can find both of these extensions in the INSTALL folder on this CD-ROM. Make sure to restart the computer after you add them to the Extensions folder.
3. CD Central locks my computer when I click on an option.
- Check your Extensions folder and make sure that you have QuickTime version 2.0 or higher and (if you have a Power Mac) the QuickTime PowerPlug version 2.0 or higher. Confirm that you have only one copy of each of these files and that the version numbers of both are the same. For example, we've seen problems on systems that have two QuickTime PowerPlugs installed (an older version and a newer version, named differently).
4. When I double-click a file in the Goodies folder, Painter launches but then says it can't open the file.
- Although they are created by Painter, most of the files in the Goodies folder are not "documents," so they won't open when you double-click them. Instead, launch Painter directly and then open the Goodie file you want from the appropriate section of Painter's interface. For example, to open a paper texture library, use the "Library" button in the Art Materials: Papers drawer.
QuickTime movies
1. The color of the movies in CD Central appears very coarse or dithered.
- Your monitor may be set to 256 colors. If possible, increase the color setting to thousands or millions in the Monitors Control Panel.
2. The movie skips frames or is jerky.
- You may be using a 1X CD-ROM drive. The QuickTime movies on this disc are designed for double-speed (2X) or faster CD-ROM drives.
- You may be low on memory. Make sure to quit any other programs currently running.
Goodies Preview
1. The color of the goodies thumbnails in CD Central appears very coarse or dithered.
- Your monitor may be set to 256 colors. If possible, increase the color setting to thousands or millions in the Monitors Control Panel.
Art Galleries
1. The color of the gallery images appears very coarse or dithered.
- Your monitor may be set to 256 colors. If possible, increase the color setting to thousands or millions in the Monitors Control Panel.
Sound/Music
1. There is no music in the opening sequence or through the Art Gallery slideshows.
- There is probably not enough free RAM to play the music. Ideally CD Central should have at least 6.5 megabytes of free RAM. Check "About this Macintosh" under the Apple menu to see how much RAM is free before you start the program. To free more RAM you should quit any programs currently running. You can also temporarily remove fonts or extensions from your System Folder and reboot the Mac to free more memory.
- You can also try to run the galleries directly from the CD-ROM. Exit CD Central and open the GALLERY folder on the disc. Select one of the subfolders and double-click the gallery.
Acrobat Documents
1. When I try to view one of the Acrobat documents, I get a dialog box telling me that Acrobat Reader wasn't found.
- It's possible you don't have the Acrobat Reader installed on your hard drive. Click on the "Install" button of the dialog box to install Acrobat. Or, run the Acrobat installer directly from the CD-ROM. You'll find it in the INSTALL folder.
- The CD Central program expects to find the Acrobat Reader on your hard drive exactly at the Acrobat installer's default location. If, when you installed the Acrobat Reader, you chose a folder other than the default, the Painter 4 Extras CD program won't find it automatically. In the dialog box, choose "Browse" and browse your hard drive to select the Acrobat Reader.
